For concrete structures, there is a risk of destruction by moisture entering the pores. For the structure to last longer, the seams and pores in it must be treated with a unique tinted concrete sealer.

During the pouring of the concrete floor, special expansion joints are made to avoid cracking of the coating. The joints have to be safeguarded from moisture or dust. So the question arises, what sealant to seal joints in concrete. Concrete is not a plastic material; it can crack due to temperature changes, during shrinkage, or due to contact with any building structure. To avoid this, make deformation slots.

Means for sealing joints

Can be divided into the following groups according to the method of exposure:

  1. surface – create a protective film that eliminates the contact of concrete with moisture
  2. penetrating – act deeper, close the inside of the pores and prevent moisture from penetrating them.

The composition of the tinted concrete sealers may vary due to the active components.

Among the most common, it is worth noting the following:

  • acrylic – suitable for indoor use, give good grip;
  • polyurethane – create a stable, protective layer due to the elasticity of the dried product;
  • Thiokol – tolerate temperature extremes, chemical effects.

Sealants can also have other active substances – silicone, bitumen, rubber.

Despite the difference in composition, tinted concrete sealers have the below features; 

  • high adhesion not only with concrete but also with stone, brick, iron, glass
  • the presence of water-repellent ability
  • resistance to sunlight
  • the ability to withstand temperature changes
  • simple application.

All sealants used for concrete floors comply with the general requirements that apply to them. But can be intended for indoor or outdoor use, differ in higher adhesion to specific materials, or have other individual properties. Therefore, before starting work, you need to choose the right tool, taking into account the existing conditions.

Types of sealers:

Acrylic 

They are universal, but it is not recommended for outdoor use. Used for sealing joints in the room. The advantage of acrylic materials is the absence of odour, the possibility of staining, and plastering. Such sealants are distinguished by vapour permeability, long-lasting elasticity, and increased adhesive properties. Acrylic sealants for outdoor use are not recommended. Acrylic compounds can close up not only concrete but also brick seams.

Polyurethane

 They have increased adhesion, are frost-resistant, anti-corrosion, and resistant to certain chemical mixtures (for example, weak acids or alkalis). Also, they are distinguished by resistance to mechanical damage, efficiency. Manufacturers guarantee the durability of concrete joints when sealing internal surfaces. The advantage of polyurethane compositions lies in the possibility of using expansion joints for processing. Increased elasticity allows them to be applied to movable joints.

For joints in concrete for outdoor use or when sealing the joint between the foundation of the building and the concrete blind area, it is recommended to use the tinted concrete sealers. Due to their adhesion and increased elasticity, they withstand repeated deformations.
