If you have a concrete floor in the basement or garage, it may be worthwhile to cover it with a waterproofing sealer to prevent water and mould from damaging it. The colored concrete sealer forms an impermeable layer over the concrete floor. A high-quality sealant will also penetrate the tiny pores of the concrete, closing the path to moisture, and fill small cracks to reduce the risk of damage to concrete and the formation of mould in it. Sealing also helps to preserve the uniform colour of the concrete floor and protect it from stains.

Colored concrete sealants are divided into two main categories. They are those used on surfaces, and others penetrate deeper into the cracks. Surface sealant, as its name suggests, forms a film on the surface that protects concrete from water and gives it shine. Penetrating sealant penetrates the pores of the concrete, seals them, and prevents water and other liquids from getting in.

Most sealants do not change the colour of concrete. Each of the main categories of sealants also has its varieties, different in colour and final appearance. Some of them give the concrete a wet look. Others provide a dry shine.

The properties

Any colored concrete sealer has two main qualities. They repel water and adhere to the concrete. Sealants comply with the concrete itself; therefore, they help to resist the penetration of water and pollutants. How deep the sealant penetrates the concrete depends on the fluidity of the substance and the size of the liquid molecules. In addition to these two basic properties, the essential qualities of the sealant are the colour and degree of gloss, which can be different.

The use of colored concrete sealers has a double effect. Firstly, the sealant prevents moisture from penetrating deep into the concrete, and secondly, it keeps the concrete surface clean. This is because the sealant reduces the ability of concrete to absorb liquid through pores. Every time water is absorbed into the concrete. It takes time for it to evaporate.

If the water in the pores of the concrete freezes, it can damage the concrete, because its volume changes. Therefore, over time, concrete will weaken. In addition to water and acids, other liquids can also penetrate the pores of the concrete, which also leads to its damage. The sealant, as such, the sealant will help in protecting concrete from water and other liquid from getting into the concrete.

When choosing a colored concrete sealer, you should consider where the concrete floor is located, what types of damage you need to protect it from, and what kind of appearance you want to give it. If you want a shiny floor, and the risk of water damage is not so high, choose a surface sealant. In the case when the greatest degree of waterproofing is required, it is better to use penetrating sealant.

Both types of sealants are available in several colours and densities from suppliers. For concrete that is often exposed to rainfall, choose the most durable sealant explicitly designed for such conditions.
